SBS STORY: EMMA VOYKHANSKAYA

Hi guys, my name is Emma Voykhanskaya and I am a sophomore in high school. I also grew up with a sports-orientated family. I have a cousin who is into hockey, a sister who does dance, and a dad who was in love with soccer. Although my sister loved to dance she was on her high-schools tennis team. As a little girl, I would go and watch her compete versus other schools.

This was when I decided that I wanted to give tennis a try. From the age of four until present-day tennis has always been there for me. Tennis allows me to showcase my competitive nature as well as allows me to balance my emotions. Whenever I feel alone, upset, or angry I tend to distance myself from my surroundings. When this happens I would take my racquet and go to the wall near me and start to hit against it. This helps me refrain from my current situation to help develop a stronger emotional response to it. Due to the current situation, the club that I train at, the wall, and the events such as tournaments have been taken away from me. As a result, I had to find another way to express my feelings. Tennis is a sport in which you play alone. Likewise, I used to participate in many tournaments so I am definitely used to handling the situation alone. With the pandemic that’s going on, I have certainly been alone and inside. However, I decided that exercising every day has really helped me out. I don’t just exercise, I always search up new workouts to try out. I am on day 60 of doing these workouts and I am beyond motivated to continue this streak. When something like tennis is taken away from me it feels great to be able to incorporate the same feeling that I get on the courts. Putting my headphones in with a motivating playlist and beginning to work out, puts me in a very determined mindset. When I heard about this blog I was beyond excited to participate and share my story. Exercising doesn’t seem like much but for someone like me who is very independent and reserved it helps me deal with my own mental health.
